Introduction

Myopopone sinensis is an extinct ant species known only from fossil remains dating to the Miocene epoch, approximately 17 million years ago. The sole known specimen is a queen fossil recovered from the Shanwang Formation in Shandong, China . As a fossil species, no living colonies exist, and no biological or behavioral data is available from observation of live specimens. The genus Myopopone belongs to the subfamily Amblyoponinae, which contains living species known for their distinctive elongated mandibles and often specialized predatory behaviors. If you are interested in keeping an ant from this genus, you would need to seek the only extant species in the group, Myopopone maculata, which is found in tropical regions of Asia and Australia.
