Introduction

Odontoponera pseudotransversa is an extinct ant species from the Middle Miocene epoch, about 14.7 million years ago . It was found in Zhangpu amber from Fujian, China, and is the first fossil record of the genus Odontoponera . Workers are approximately 7.8mm in body length, smaller than living relatives like Odontoponera transversa and Odontoponera denticulata . The fossil shows a mix of traits from these species, suggesting it might be an ancestral form . Only one specimen exists, found among over 950 ant specimens in the amber, representing just 0.1% abundance .
